What is a Naturopath?

A Naturopath is a health practitioner that uses a holistic and comprehensive approach to health. A holistic approach considers and assesses the whole situation of the individual, and not just the presenting symptoms. Naturopathy is a system of medicine that also emphasises supporting, and not suppressing the body’s physical attempts, and its innate ability to eliminate disease.

Disease is viewed as a state of imbalance within the body. It may be an imbalance at various levels; nutritional, metabolic (hormonal), physiological, emotional or mental level, or a combination of any of these. Signs and symptoms of such imbalances within the body may manifest in many forms, and give clues and information about the underlying problem(s).

Investigative tests are often recommended to gain further insight to issues and aid treatment goals.

How can naturopathy help?

Women’s Hormonal Health - Women have special health needs that change with age. Naturopathy is a system of medicine that can help women to improve and manage their health through every stage of the lifecycle.

Natural Fertility Management - Natural Fertility Management (NFM) refers to the provision of information, education, herbal and nutritional support to individuals and couples seeking to improve their reproductive health and fertility.

Preconception Health Care - Put simply, preconception health care is about making better babies! It aims to ensure that there is an adequate supply of all those nutritional factors, which are essential for the health of sperm, egg and foetus, and an absence of those factors which are known to compromise general health or which are harmful to the germ (early) cells and to foetal development.

Pregnancy & Birth - Pregnancy is time of enormous physical and emotional change    in a woman’s life. Using natural and complementary medicines to avoid and/or treat      many of those ‘common’ pregnancy complaints is a safe and sensible choice for many    women. The needs of pregnancy are ensured through nutritional assessments and          dietary guidance. Preparing the body for the journey of labour and birth is also              supported towards the end of pregnancy.

Postnatal period - Naturopathic support during this time can often be for                  both mother and baby. It’s another time of transition. For the woman it’s the                  change from pregnancy to the roles of motherhood and breastfeeding, and for baby;      from the womb to the outside world. It’s a period marked by many physical,                  emotional and lifestyle changes and using natural and complementary medicines to        support these provides both an effective and safe option for mothers and babies. An        appointment is usually scheduled for the first few weeks after the baby is born, if                            this is appropriate.

What can I expect from a consultation?

The initial consultation usually requires 1 hour. When the appointment is made a short questionnaire is emailed to you to be completed before the consultation. This covers personal and family health history and your health concerns. At the consultation, you will also complete a short form covering your dietary and lifestyle areas. This allows more time to be devoted to discussion of health issues and treatment plans.

Follow-up consultations are typically scheduled initially for 1-2 weeks, then between 3-4 weeks, depending on the individual case. This ensures appropriate and progressive treatment is maintained, and helps support you with staying motivated towards your health goals.
